Floyd Mayweather Jr., the renowned pound-for-pound boxing champion, appears to be on the verge of making a significant return to the professional boxing arena after nearly a decade away. This development comes in light of recent negotiations for a world title match that have reportedly fallen through, subsequently paving the way for a potentially lucrative opportunity for Mayweather.
Mayweather, who officially retired from competitive boxing following his victory over Conor McGregor in the highly publicized ‘Money Fight’ back in 2017, has since engaged exclusively in exhibition matches, continuing to generate substantial earnings. However, whispers of a possible return to professional boxing have intensified, particularly fueled by the recent re-emergence of his longtime rival, Manny Pacquiao.
During Pacquiao’s comeback this past summer, he fought Mario Barrios and managed to secure a draw, coming alarmingly close to reclaiming the WBC welterweight title despite being inactive for an extended period. The Filipino boxing legend was also rumored to be on the brink of announcing another world title bout against WBA champion Rolando Romero, further stoking excitement in the boxing community.
However, it has now been revealed that discussions regarding that potential fight have broken down. Romero is expected to fulfill his mandatory obligations and defend his title against Uzbekistan’s Shakhram Giyasov instead. In an interview with The Ring, Giyasov’s manager, Vadim Kornilov, expressed that they were willing to wait for their opportunity had the Pacquiao-Romero fight been confirmed:
"I don’t think an exception works when there’s no fight and it’s not announced. If [the Romero-Pacquiao fight] was happening, that’s one thing; we have a lot of respect for a fight like that and for Pacquiao especially. But when there is no fight, I believe that rules have to be followed, and Rolly has to fight Giyasov. I never understand why some fighters get exceptions and don’t have to fight their mandatories."
As a result of this change, Floyd Mayweather is now being viewed as a primary candidate for Pacquiao’s upcoming match, reigniting speculation about a rematch between these two legends more than ten years after their original bout. This scenario raises intriguing questions: Could a Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch be on the horizon? What would it mean for both fighters' legacies? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
