The Shocking Turn of Events: Filipe Luis's Sudden Exit
In a surprising twist, former Chelsea defender and Flamengo manager, Filipe Luis, found himself out of a job just hours after leading his team to an impressive 8-0 victory. But here's where it gets controversial...
Filipe Luis, at 40 years old, had an incredible track record with Flamengo. He averaged a trophy every 14 games, an astonishing achievement! During his 100 matches in charge, he guided the club to seven titles, including the prestigious Copa Libertadores in 2025.
However, despite these successes, Flamengo had recently suffered back-to-back final losses in 2026. But, with an 11-0 aggregate victory over Madureira, they secured a spot in the Campeonato Carioca final this weekend against Fluminense.
And this is the part most people miss: despite the upcoming final, Luis was abruptly sacked by the club. The announcement came at 00:59 local time, with a brief statement confirming his departure and that of his assistant and physical trainer.
"Filipe Luis and his team have made significant contributions to Flamengo, but the club has decided to move in a different direction," the statement read.
Among his notable achievements, Luis, a Premier League winner with Chelsea in 2015, became the ninth man to win the Copa Libertadores both as a player and as a coach. He also brought home numerous domestic and international honors during his tenure, including Serie A, Copa do Brasil, and the Fifa Challenger Cup.
Flamengo's current league position is 11th, with a mixed bag of results so far this season. They trail leaders Palmeiras by six points, but with a game in hand, there's still a chance for a turnaround.
