A nearby city is making strides in population growth close to Calgary, and the numbers are quite eye-opening!
Recently released demographic data from Statistics Canada reveals that Alberta's population has seen remarkable growth. Over the span of five years, the province’s total population surged from 4,431,531 in July 2021 to an impressive 5,029,346 by July 2025, marking a substantial increase of nearly 600,000 residents.
Calgary itself is at the forefront of this trend, with its population rising from 1,356,293 in 2021 to 1,612,834 as of July 2025—a notable gain exceeding 250,000 individuals.
However, when we delve into the surrounding areas, one city stands out for its significant population increase: Airdrie. This city started with a population of 77,079 in 2021 but has since welcomed more than 15,000 new residents, bringing its total to 92,544 by July 2025, representing the largest population jump within the Calgary region.
Following Airdrie, Chestermere has also experienced growth, adding 8,666 new residents to reach a total of 31,671. Cochrane, not far behind, saw its population rise from 33,295 in 2021 to 39,397, demonstrating a healthy expansion as well.
Other notable areas that have witnessed growth include Banff, which increased by almost 3,000 residents to a population of 11,402, and Okotoks, which grew by over 2,000, now totaling 33,482. Strathmore, too, added 1,585 new residents, raising its population to 14,831.
Looking to the north, Edmonton has also recorded significant growth. The city’s population climbed from 1,050,954 in July 2021 to 1,238,295 by July 2025, marking an increase of 187,350 people.
